The weather has been unusually warm for January in New York; It seemed like the perfect time to hit the beach. I got together with my friend and boyfriend, and we made the trip out to the (in)famous Coney Island.
Here’s a fair warning to everyone: the trip doesn’t take the 45 min. the MTA website says it takes. It took an hour and a half to get there on the F from 14th street. So, definitely bring a book along or have really good company. The train does travel above ground occasionally, but there aren’t much sights to see. That is, unless you’re into enormous cemeteries and rusted train stations.
When we finally got there, the sun was shining high in the sky and we were ready for some Nathan’s Famous hot dogs.
Ha. Funny story about that. I was looking up Nathan’s online the night before in the wee hours of the morning, out of curiosity. I couldn’t find the hours they were open, so I decided to call them at 2:36 am expecting to get an answering machine of some sort. A few rings in and someone actually picked up. At first I was surprised that someone was actually there. Obviously, the first thing he said was that they were closed. After some baffling questioning, I learned they’re open from 1pm to 1am, i think? I wasn’t too sure he understood nor had the patience at 2:36 to really deal with my questions. I did confirm that they did close at 1am at least.
Anyway, back to the story. We got to Nathan’s and ordered ourselves a serving of heart attacks ala 3 hot dogs with sauerkraut and onions, bacon-cheese fries, and an order of fish and chips. The hot dogs aren’t too spectacular compared to all of the hot dogs available in the city, but they were still pretty tasty. The fish and chips were average. Once again, nothing too outstanding. We couldn’t finish the bacon-cheese fries. It was just too much. Too much.
Afterwards, we strolled the boardwalk and the beach. It was just great to get out of the city, even if it took nearly 2 hours to do so. I’d hate to visit in the summer with people crowding everywhere. Even though it was the beginning of January, there was still a good amount of people. I was expecting a total ghost town. All in all, I enjoyed the trip. Slowly but surely, I’m getting all these “to do in NYC” things done.
